Kim Swee: Take advantage of Safawi’s absence
Malaysia football Under 22 (U-22) head coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee said his players should take full advantage of Safawi Rasid’s absence at the upcoming SEA Games 2019 in the Philippines.
“It gives the other players a chance. If Safawi was in the squad, one or two players might have missed out but with Safawi’s absence, it gives them a chance to prove themselves and fight for a spot in the starting eleven and the team,” said the 48-year-old.
And despite it being a tough call, Kim Swee insists that the omission of Safawi was done with the player’s best interests at heart.
“I made this decision because Safawi has featured in many games for club and country this season. Safawi understands why he was not picked and it is for his own benefit, JDT’s (Johor Darul Ta’zim F.C.) and the national team.
“For the benefit of all, I had to give Safawi a break and I hope everyone understands why I have done this,” he said.
22-year-old Safawi scored two goals to help Malaysia overcome Indonesia 2-0 in the World Cup 2022/Asian Cup 2023 qualifiers on Tuesday.
