Mourinho praises team following defeat
Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho insisted he is “really, really proud” of his team despite their 1-0 defeat to RB Leipzig in the Champions League last-16 first leg clash.
Visitors RB Leipzig dominated most of the possession and sealed the well-deserved win through a penalty by Liverpool target Timo Werner in the 58th minute.
And things could have been a lot worse for Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, had goalkeeper Hugo Lloris not made several important saves to keep them in the tie.
Tottenham were short of attacking options following injuries to Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, with Mourinho comparing his side to Barcelona without Lionel Messi, Luiz Suarez and Antoine Griezmann.
“The result is 1-0 not 10-1 – the result is open, it’s as simple as that. We would not be the first team to lose the first game at home and win the tie away,” said the 57-year-old Portuguese.
“The thing that keeps me confident is the spirit, the mentality of my players – it’s what they are not just as players, especially what they are as guys… a fantastic group of players.”
Mourinho added, “I am so, so proud of players, what worries me is this is the situation for rest of the season… speaking of the next game against Leipzig one thing I can guarantee because this is the mentality of my players – even with I don’t know who will play in attack – we will fight.”
