Saf the Man as Malaysia down Indonesia
Safawi Rasid found the net twice to help Malaysia defeat rivals Indonesia 2-0 in the World Cup 2022/Asian Cup 2023 qualifiers at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium on Tuesday.
The 22-year-old Johor Darul Ta’zim F.C. forward opened the scoring in the 29th minute with a beautiful free-kick from 20 metres out and doubled his tally in the 72nd minute by unleashing an unstoppable shot past Indonesia goalkeeper Ridho Muhammad.
The last time Indonesia defeated Malaysia at the National Stadium was in the semi-finals of the AFF Cup back in 2005.
Following his side’s impressive win, Malaysia boss Tan Cheng Hoe said,”It was an incredible performance by our players, it wasn’t easy to play against Indonesia who fielded a different set of players. It was a difficult match because our players were a bit lethargic, and they started a little slow. They kept losing the ball and allowed Indonesia to move the ball around.
“But we got the important opening goal from Safawi who played very well, and in the second half we got back into the game and our flow became very, very good.”
The Harimau Malaya currently occupy the second spot in Group G, with nine points, just two behind leaders Vietnam.
