Seven Eritrean players missing

A total of seven players from the Eritrea national football team have gone missing after finishing as runners-up of the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup in Uganda.

Shockingly, it’s not the first time this year that Eritrean footballers have disappeared while on international duty, with five players also fleeing from their hotel in October’s CECAFA Under-20 Challenge Cup.

According to CECAFA spokesperson Rogers Mulindwa, there is a thorough search being conducted to locate the players and the Ugandan authorities have been informed about their disappearance.

“The information I have is that seven of them escaped,” he said.

“We have already notified the police, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations and the embassy. We are working closely to locate them and I think we shall get them. They may not have Christmas in Uganda.”

Human rights group Amnesty International revealed that thousands of Eritrean citizens continue to seek means of fleeing the country while authorities severely restrict their right to do so.
