Cardio before or after strength training?
Have you ever wondered when is the best time to do cardio? Should it be done before or after your strength training session? Well, let’s find out!
It depends on your goal
What do you want to achieve…Better stamina? Cardio first. If you’re training for a marathon or anything of that nature, do cardio first. This way you can save and focus all your energy on your goal. If you don’t have any specific goals to achieve then you may want to combine cardio and strength so you don’t overwork your muscles.
A 2016 study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research done on 11 healthy men to examine their strength performance 10 minutes after a vigorous cardio workout suggested that their strength performance was significantly compromised after doing cardio workouts.
What you want to achieve really matters when you it comes to deciding which workout you should perform first.
What if I want to lose weight?
If this is the case then whatever you do first doesn’t really matter. Most people will focus on doing cardio as much as they can because it burns more calories however do not avoid strength training as it helps you increase or maintain lean body mass, which will burn more calories in the long run. According to studies, the more muscle mass you have, the higher your resting metabolic rate. If you balance cardio and strength training really well, you can lose weight faster and efficiently.
Also in order for all this to work, you also need to pay attention to your diet, recovery period and sleep schedule!
