Sathia backs Kim Swee
Football Coaches Association of Malaysia (FCAM) President, B. Sathianathan, insists that Ong Kim Swee is the right man to guide the Malaysia Under-23 squad despite their recent failure at the 2020 AFC U-23 Championship Qualifiers.
The Harimau Muda squad failed to qualify for the championship in Thailand next year after finishing as runners up of a group which also featured the likes of China (winners), Laos and Philippines.
But the disappointing outcome aside, Sathianathan said that Kim Swee should be given credit for being able to hold China, coached by Guus Hiddink, to a 2-2 draw in the deciding match and for the way that he has shaped the team overall.
“Even though Hiddink coached Chelsea and has been at the World Cup previously, Kim Swee showed that he is just as good. This proves that local coaches are capable of competing at the highest level.
“I believe that he’s (Kim Swee) the most qualified person for the job right now. In fact he should be given more control of the U-16, U-17 and U-18 squads.
“He can pick out talents at a younger age and help strengthen the national squad in the time to come,” said Sathianathan.
